I’ve been a pretty big fan of Penguin Prison (a.k.a. Chris Glover, the slick prince of synthpop and dance) for a solid couple of years now, so getting to share the stage with him as he went balls to the wall at Echoplex (on my birthday coincidentally) was nothing short of life-affirming. I wanted a face-melting dance party to mark my 24th year of living, and I’m glad to say he did not disappoint even in the slightest bit. The multi-instrumentalist actually stripped down for a dj set, armed with only a mixer and and a microphone, which was perfect for a Saturday night disco dance-off. Glover’s live vocals were the cherry on top of the most groovy ice cream sundae ever. I couldn’t resist singing and dancing along as he busted out his delectable tunes. The crowd drunkenly gorged on all of his greatest hits (The Worse it Gets, Don’t Fuck With My Money, Hollywood, all accompanied by his best remixes). My conclusion? Anyone who opens with a cover of Prince’s ‘I Wanna Be Your Lover’ has got it going on. DJing or not, you should check out Penguin Prison the first chance you get.
